Our Traditional Working Farm Collies
Registered Old Time Scotch Collies

As a kennel, we choose to be responsible by thoroughly testing all breeding stock for a multitude of genetic health-related conditions. Also, we have our dogs evaluated through PennHIP. We only breed dogs that have good working ability with a solid off-switch. These dogs must have a relaxed demeanor when not asked to work, desire to please, sound intuition, and lovely companionable temperaments, but with capable grit and drive when called upon. Our dogs resemble the Farm Shepherds of old. We match pairs desiring to produce a well-rounded homestead and family dog that is capable, but gentle and kind, working with smarts and solving problems in the least disruptive and most pleasing manner.
Shepherd's Hearth Traditional Farm Collies
is happy to embrace the diversity of physical type within the breed spectrum - never compromising quality of body or character for type or color. We want our Farm Shepherds to add enrichment to any farmstead or home they grace.

Retired from our program: Benji is a registered OTSC and has been DNA tested clear and non-carrier of 170+ genetically related illnesses including CEA, MDR1, and PRCD. Penn Hip Score: Right DI .34, Left DI .33 Benji was the wonder-dog that inspired our idea of a kennel. Benji makes our farm easy to run. We have many stories of his amazing abilities from herding to tracking starting from his first day here at 4 months old till today. Daily, he impresses us with his intuition of stock and what we need. Benji lies quietly near lambs that need to be warmed, tenderly watching over them, but still has the grit to put the bull back in the pen. He has herded poultry, sheep, goats, cattle, llamas, and even an occasional pig. Benji will keep hawks off of kittens and squirrels out of the apple tree. Benji tends towards wanting to be a one person dog, but works for and protects the whole family. He is reserved with strangers unless we OK them. He is an able and square dog with a naturally bobbed tail. Benji has a mountain of stories behind him published on his farm page.

Tansy is a registered OTSC and is genetically clear by parentage and DNA tested to be carrier/clear of DM only. Penn Hip tested. Tansy comes to us from very special lines in both work and intuition with solid breeding behind her. We are fortunate to have her here on our farm! She has proved her worth here as a working farm dog and moves chickens with care and will move sheep and protect from rams when called upon. She also is keen to push off cows and a horse when needed with determination when called upon. Tansy checks on our rabbits with care and is an avid sky-watcher. However, Tansy most especially excels at nannying both children and puppies. She has been a great aid in tutoring and teaching rules even when young! Always playing gently and appropriately for the age of her charges. She is always counting and watching out for everyone. We have found Tansy to be especially smart and one to think ahead of, but her desire to please is strong and she is a very loving dog. Tansy has not yet been bred at this time. We are excited about this dog's future with us here at Shepherd's Hearth!

Retired from our program: Winter (Winnie) is a registered OTSC and is genetically clear by parentage and DNA tested to be carrier/clear of both CEA and MDR1. Penn Hip Score pending. Winnie is Lorna's full sister, and they work together to keep the air free from predators and scavengers. Winnie tolerates no coon, skunk, possum, etc. that might even be thinking of coming to visit her rabbits or chickens: her self-imposed personal and very important mission! She is an excellent nanny dog - very watchful of the children and constantly making her rounds to check on everyone. She has a nice relaxed manner when off the job and is a very patient and kind dog. We call her the smiley dog, as she is always so happy to see anyone or go anywhere! Winter will shadow for chores keeping the rams at bay and holding the gate when needed. She has a very reliable off-switch and is eager to please. Winter is very easy-going and kind-hearted. A gentle and capable farmer's shadow.

Lorna is a registered OTSC and has been DNA tested clear and non-carrier of most of the 170+ genetically related illnesses in per Embark. She does carry n/m of both CEA and MDR1 but is not affected. Penn Hip Score: Right DI=.38, Left DI=.36 Lorna is a very agile and fast mover - a faithful sky-watcher keeping chickens, lambs, and rabbits safe. She herds cows and sheep with drive and intuition. Above all things, she is maternal and loves to snuggle and play with "her" kids. She does carry the classic "look-back" and is more reserved in nature. She is exceedingly devoted to her family willing to follow anywhere even swimming long distances to be reunited. She is an alert dog, often the first to notice when something is off. One of her most unique skills is the ability to identify sick or injured stock out in the pasture and bring our attention to the problem. Lorna has a good "off-switch" and is quite biddable and loving. She is a great all-around farm dog and companion!

Peach is a registered OTSC. Genetically clear according to DNA testing and by parentage for all but carrier/non-effected for CEA and MDR1 . Penn Hip Score: Right DI.32, Left DI .36 Peach works on a heritage cattle farm. Her job is moving cattle, and she loves it. She works heels with Violet who heads wilder cows and calves. She walks up quietly and holds her position to gently turn the easy cows through gates. Another responsibility Peach has is to keep birds of prey airborne. Black Vultures are not permitted to land, and hawks and low-flying airplanes are in jeopardy when Peach is on call. She lives happily in the house - her spot is under her master's desk. She loves people and other dogs. She enjoys car and truck rides and a chance to go to the stores. Peach is a well-built shaded sable with a long and full tail. She is a fine example of a loving companion and dependable canine farm hand.

Retired from our program: Violet is a registered OTSC and has been DNA tested clear and non-carrier of 170+ genetically related illnesses including CEA, MDR1, and PRCD. Penn Hip tested. Violet keeps the gates and fence lines moving cattle when necessary at her farm. She has learned to work around sheep and help with chores at a friend's farm. Violet has been trained for chores and intuitive moving of poultry and sheep. She is an absolutely marvelous child-sitter and loves to count and tend her charges. She is a very loving and maternal dog who has a high desire to please, but with the grit to challenge non-compliant cattle. She has a very calm and even temperament and is an outstanding mother. This sweet girl communicates creatively to people when something is not right. Problem solving and sky-watcher. Violet is very gregarious and unreserved in nature. She is a beautiful and long type with a full tail. A child-guardian to the core! Please visit the link below to see more about Violet on her cattle farm.
